Wheelchair-friendly luxury ski chalets

As a consequence of being located in the mountains, most ski chalets tend to have an abundance of steps as they are usually constructed on multiple levels and built on gradients. Naturally for wheelchair users that is somewhat problematic. There are, however, exceptions to this.

We are often asked to find luxury ski chalets which are suitable for wheelchair users so we decided to create a shortlist of wheelchair-friendly luxury ski chalets to make it easier for you to browse the suitable properties.

Our collection of wheelchair-friendly ski chalets includes apartments that occupy just one level and also chalets that have a lift to enable easy access to all floors.Indeed it may also work if one of the bedrooms is on the same level as the living areas. Some of the chalets have larger bedrooms and wet rooms/’walk in’ showers to provide wheelchair users with a little more room to manoeuvre too.

In addition to the issues of mobility within the chalets, we also understand the importance of ease of travel to and from the pistes and the resort centre. Most of the luxury ski chalets we feature provide a driver service to guests and in some cases are at your beck and call 24 hours a day. Some ski chalets have lift access right down to the garage level to minimise the inconvenience of transferring in and out of the vehicle.

We also understand that everybody’s requirements and concerns are different. We are here to help and to answer any questions you may have. Not only are we completely impartial, but also we know the chalets and resorts well, so we can advise on details like how steep the gradient is when strolling in to the resort centre.

Whilst all of our shortlisted wheelchair-friendly ski chalets are certainly at the ‘luxury’ end of the scale, they range in level (and price) right up to the absolute best luxury chalets in the world.

Chalet Kanzi in St.Anton, is a contemporary apartment sleeping up to eight people. It is located in the pretty Nasserein area, close to the ski lifts and up a gently slopes road from the village centre. An internal lift takes you up to the apartment, which is all on one level. There are no internal steps and the rooms are large; some also come with walk-in showers to minimise any mobility issues.

Alternatively, in a convenient location near the centre of Val d’Isere in France, you will find the spectacular Chalet Marco Polo - one of our flagship luxury ski chalets.

No detail has been overlooked here and there is plenty to keep you busy if you are not planning to ski, from the stunning indoor swimming pool and spa area to the games room, wine cellar, spacious heated terrace and bar area. All of these areas can be accessed via an internal lift to enable easy access for wheelchair users. The resort centre itself is fairly flat too, thus minimising the mobility issues when exploring the local bars, shops and restaurants nearby.

Whilst many ski resorts are rapidly improving their lifts and facilities making the mountains more accessible for everyone, the French resorts are currently some of the best and well equipped for less abled skiers. Also many ski schools such as Summit offer adaptive skiing lessons and equipment, whether you would like an instructor or to go independent, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the pistes. Resorts such as Megève and Val d’Isere offer a discounted lift pass for a disabled skier and an assistant, should you need a little help.
