La Voile de Saint Tropez: 30 September – 8 October 2017.

If anywhere is known for its dazzling harbour, it has to be St. Tropez.

Once a traditional fishing village, it was made famous by Brigitte Bardot in the 1950s and now attracts the world’s A list along with their superyachts and high spec cruisers to soak up its glamorous vibe.

With some of the world’s finest boats moored on the water’s edge, a walk along the harbour on a sunny day is an attraction in itself. But if you’re a particular sailing enthusiast or simply love to admire these beautiful examples of craftsmanship, there is no better time to visit than during La Voile de Saint Tropez.

The prestigious international sailing regatta takes place in the Gulf of St.Tropez and is usually held during the first week of October each year, marking the end of the sailing season.

Now in its 19th year, it all started when 12m JI Ikra‘s skipper, Jean Laurin challenged a Swan 44: Pride to a race. The route would take them from St. Tropez, to a shallow area of water known as ‘Nioularge’, around five miles away from Pampelonne and back to the famous Club 55, where 12m JI would be crowned the rightful winner.

Over the years, others joined in and created their own races and since then it has become a fantastic showcase for not only sailing as a sport but of the beauty of the finest classic and technically advanced modern sailing boats around.

Classic and modern sailing boats sail separately and in total there are more than 300 entries. Take a stroll along the quayside beforehand and it’s like walking through sailing history from yachts over 100 years old through to the futuristic Wally series.

Today it attracts up to 80,000 people and with everyone in good spirits, the atmosphere is fantastic. When you’re not spectating, there is plenty to enjoy back on back on shore around the race village, with bars, music and market stalls. One of the highlights however has to be the crew parade which is taking place on Thursday evening this year.

With the weather remaining warm well into middle of October in St. Tropez, combing a visit to Le Voile de Saint Tropez with a luxury villa holiday at this glorious time of year offers the perfect excuse to soak up the last of the summer sun whilst enjoying this sporting spectacular.
