You could be mistaken in thinking ski holidays are only about the skiing, discussing the snow conditions and where to find the best view. However, surprising to many guests, each resort hosts numerous events throughout the season to keep you entertained and to showcase a little of their history and local traditions. We here at the Firefly Collection have chosen our top 10 events throughout this upcoming ski season and with everything from Christmas festivities to an international dance show, we’re sure you won’t be bored! 

 

 

DECEMBER

 

Advent Magic in the Park – St Anton

6th, 12th, 13th & 20th December 2015

Relive the childhood excitement for the countdown to Christmas in St. Anton. With its magical and unique charm there really is no better place to spend some pre-Christmas time. St Anton am Alberg is hosting the 2nd ‘Advent Magic in the Park’ this December. Stroll through the buzzy town center passing each different area from the life-size nativity to the ‘Christmas photo corner’ and definitely do not pass on the traditional Christmas market. Mulled wine and Christmas cookies taste so much better in the alpine air!

JANUARY

 

Ladies First – St Anton

9th – 30th January 2016

“Who runs the world? Girls!’ Well, more fitting would be “Who runs St. Anton? Girls!” From the 9th – 30th January 2016 ladies will be the focus for the ‘Ladies First’ feel good weeks. St Anton am Alberg will be spoiling their female guests with discounts, goodies, wellness and relaxation treats. Just head to the tourist office at the start of your trip to collect your exclusive booklet and be treated like the guest of honour for the rest of your stay!

'La Grande Odyssée’ (International dog-sledding) – Les Gets

13th January 2016

For all the dog lovers out there this is an event not to be missed. For the sixth time, the Portes du Soleil resorts will host the unique event ‘La Grande Odyssée’ uniting the best mushers in the world. The Grand Odyssée is a competition that gets back in touch with adventure, being known as the most difficult international dog-sled race in the world. The contestants leave the village centre of Les Gets and go over the Chavannes slopes and under the Maison des Gets. The week surrounding this race will see Les Gets transformed with whole family animations, spectacles, and exhibitions about this amazing sport and the adorable furry friends.

Polo on Ice – St. Moritz

29th January -31st January 2016

When you imagine polo we’re sure the setting of a frozen lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains doesn’t come to mind. However, on the final weekend in January, St. Moritz gains the title of The World Capital of Polo. It began in 1985 when snow polo had its world premier here, and continuing since then teams will travel far and wide to win the Cartier Trophy on the frozen lake of St Moritz. The challenge of playing on snow, as well as the unique location of 1850 metres above sea level and the history of game attached to St. Moritz all combine to make this tournament one of a kind. FEBRUARY

 

Festival International d’Art Pyrotechnique – Courchevel

11th February–7th March 2016

New years celebrations may have been and gone, but that doesn’t mean firework displays in the mountains come to a stop. Courchevel, the leading resort for mountain fireworks displays, celebrates this annual event for another spectacular year.  This ‘pyrotechnics festival’ is a competition with a number of stunning fireworks displays, where specialist companies from around the world compete for the title of best in show. Each year over 8,000 spectators come to see the show, watch the traditional torch-lit descent and sip on mulled wine to keep warm throughout the evening activities.

‘White Turf’ horse racing – St. Moritz

7th February – 21st February 2016 (every Sunday)

Dating all the way back to 1907, the “White Turf” horse races have continued to be held in the Engadin Valley on the frozen lake of St Moritz. St Moritz truly becomes a millionaire’s playground throughout these three weekends in February, with visitors from around the world coming to wine, dine and bet on the most lucrative race in Switzerland. As well as the traditional horse and jockey races there is also the ski-joring race where men and women are pulled along on skis by their horses. Kandahar Alpine Skiing World Cup 2016 – Chamonix

19th -20th February 2016

After a two year break the infamous ‘La Verte des Houches’ is back and Chamonix is once again hosting this great event. Although its name hints towards a green run, it is anything but. It is in fact a back run 3,343 metres in length with a vertical drop of 870 metres. The only things ‘green’ are the surrounding pine trees. The Kandahar offers the ultimate skiers from around the world 2 minutes of exhilaration with a combination of challenging runs and jumps.

MARCH

 

Easter Festival – Courchevel

26th-27th March 2016

Calling all chocolate lovers! On Easter Sunday morning Courchevel will be again putting on their giant Easter egg hunt across the valley. Go search for the hidden eggs in a number of lifts, which will keep you going whilst exploring the extensive 3 valleys. Of course it is important to remember that Easter isn’t just about the chocolate, Easter bunnies and ‘Parties on the Pistes’ (held the night before for both adults and children, obviously with more chocolate involved). For those wishing to celebrate the religious aspect of Easter, Courchevel organizes a large Easter Mass service at the ice rink, where there will be a gospel band to make the festivities extra special!

APRIL

 

Swatch Xtreme Freeride World Tour Final – Verbier

1st April – 3rd April 2016

As the last stop on the Freeride World Tour, eyes will be firmly on Verbier to see who will be the king and queen of the freeride world.  Having hosted this event since 1996, the Verbier stage with the remarkable competition face, Bec des Rosses, is recognized as the most technical and most demanding by all competitors. With the likes of local Verbier legend Xavier de le Rue and Chamonix's Aurelien Ducroz hopefully participating, the Xtreme Verbier is definitely a ‘one to watch’ event if you are in here at the start of April.

World Dancesport Open – Megeve

8th April – 10th April 2016

It’s time to remove the ski boots and get out your dancing shoes as World Dancesport Open is back. Thousands of dancers, both children and adults, compete against one another to the rhythms of Latin and Ballroom dance music. From samba, rumba, cha-cha, pasodoble and other traditional dances, such as the Viennese waltz, quickstep, foxtrot and tango this is an impressive event that will be sure to entertain you and get you in the mood for a boogie.
