What's new in Chamonix?

As ski resorts go, Chamonix is considered one of the world’s best, and is has continued to be popular ever since it hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924. The skiing in Chamonix is outstanding, offering something for all abilities across five distinct ski areas and this year it is set to be even better with some new upgrades that are taking place for 2015/2016. We’re excited to say the least.

Firstly, there is the installation of the new Brevent lift. Providing easy access to the Planpraz plateau and the Téléski 2000 poma from the Planpraz gondola station, it will be perfect for beginner skiers and snowboarders.

Secondly, the new Melezes chairlift in Les Houches will replace both the “La Cha” and the “Chamois” draglifts.  This is great news for families and nervous skiers, as this lift will slow down at the top and bottom, making getting on and off so much easier.  It will also be faster and more efficient and will open up a whole new ski area for exploring! Being able to take 2000 people per hour, we’re sure this will be a great addition to the Chamonix ski resort.

If snowboard and ski cross is something you enjoy then you must visit the redesigned Snowsports Area where the old Les Grands Montets snowpark used to be. With 2 new boarder cross tracks, one recreational track sponsored by BMW, and one more technical track, which meets FIS competition standards, this should definitely be on your agenda.  The BMW route is 400m long with 3 jumps, 8 whoops and 2 banked turns. There’s also a video recording system and stopwatch timing that will make it lots of fun for competing against your friends and having some entertaining souvenirs to watch at home. The more technical route is 800m long and includes 5 jumps, 10 whoops and 8 banked turns. This route is the perfect for club training and competition practice.

And finally, the biggest upgrade of them all, which is bound to make many skiers and snowboarders’ eager for the up-coming season, is the brand new Chamonix Snow Park! This 1000m long and 100m wide Snowpark will be located to the right of the  “Téléski du Col” at Le Tour, and will be one of the biggest in Europe! This freestyle area will have a dedicated téléski and a 4 persons chairlift reaching up to the altitude of 2100m, therefore benefitting from plenty of natural snowfall.  But don’t worry if freestyle is not your thing, perhaps the most tempting thing will be watching the action (and occasional wipe-out) from the ‘Cool Zone’ with its own sound system.

On top of all of this, the town offers a whole host of activities, from an ice-rink to a climbing wall, making it an excellent choice for non-skiers too. In the evening there’s a lively après ski scene and a good selection of restaurants, from casual to Michelin-starred gems, making Chamonix the perfect resort for your luxury ski holiday this year.
