Destination Guide: Italy
Italy’s 20 regions have been unified less than two centuries so each area has its own distinct feel – many of Italy’s regions feel almost like small countries in their own right.
There are luxury villas in Italy to suit every type of holiday, from rustic retreats in the wineries of Tuscany and Umbria, to cultural wanders around ruins in Rome, high-glamour on the Amalfi coast, and sophisticated relaxation on the lakes.
Luxury Italian villas might be anything from a converted barn, as rustic on the outside as it is high-spec on the inside, to the sort of property that in the UK would be deemed ‘a stately home’, with manicured gardens, rafts of staff on hand and regal views of the Italian lakes or the Bay of Naples from Villa Astina in Sorrento.
During the winter months, the Italian Alps combine stylish towns such as Cortina d’Ampezzo, stunning mountain landscapes; so much so that the Dolomites have been classified a UNESCO world heritage site, alongside a host of magnificent luxury ski chalets to match. The Italian Alps certainly has its own unique flair and with pistes often quieter than the larger resorts in France and Switzerland, you are sure to get plenty of skiing in.
The dramatic and beautiful scenery of the Italian Alps is only heightened when the snow melts during the warmer months. From mountain biking to rock climbing and horse riding, a summer ski chalet rental in Italy offers plenty to do on a luxury chalet holiday.
It’s certainly a country of many cultures, but what binds all of it together is an unfailing friendliness and hospitality wherever you go. And, of course, it’s just beautiful. Little wonder that artists from Boticelli to Caravaggio to Michelangelo all hailed from the ‘bel paese’.
Best places to eat and drink in
Food is high on the agenda here. It’s what Italy is all about. Aside from the obvious pizza and pasta dishes, almost every region has its own particular speciality and its own D.O.P products. You’ll return home from your luxury villa holiday a food snob but you’ll know you’ve tasted the best mozzarella, Parma ham, olives, ricotta and just about everything in between. Did we mention the wine is pretty good here, too apparently?!
You could fill entire books with restaurant recommendations in Italy but there are a couple not to miss if you’re nearby on your luxury villa holiday. Osteria Francescana in Modena serves a fusion of traditional and uber-modern Italian cuisine and appears with dogged regularity on various ‘Best Restaurants In The World’ lists – it also has three Michelin stars. The restaurant at the Villa Fiordaliso Hotel on Lake Garda is perfect for a special-occasion meal when dining out of your luxury villa, serving creative dishes in the building where Mussolini entertained his mistress, Claretta Petacci.
Food and drink is taken just as seriously in the Italian Alps, and when staying in one of Firefly Collection’s luxury ski chalets in Italy there is everything from traditional local fare to Michelin starred restaurants to tempt you.
Best time to visit
The hottest and most crowded months will be July and August. April to June is probably the best time to visit for a luxury villa holiday and the weather is still warm in September and October, with the southern part of the country staying warmer longer.
The ski season tends to run from December to April.
