Destination Guide: Seychelles
About Seychelles
The Seychelles consists of 115 islands scattered across 400,000 sq. kms of the Indian Ocean, just a few degrees off the equator. Some of the islands are granite outcrops jutting out of the sea and some are coral, but they are all known for their talcum-powder soft, white sand beaches and stunning exclusive luxury villas.
There is an inner group of 41 granite islands, some with dramatic rock structures, which make spectacular and beautiful contrasts with the immaculate sand beaches. The islands further out are made entirely of coral and none reach more than about 3 metres above sea level.
The international airport is on the main island of Mahé, and most visitors tend not to stay in its capital Victoria.
The Seychelles’ second largest island is Praslin and sits 22 miles to the north east of Mahé. Praslin is a bit more relaxed than Mahé, and has some spectacular beaches.
There are few ferries linking the smaller islands and travel from Mahé is best done by helicopter when traveling to your luxury villa.
Best places to eat and drink in Seychelles
Being surrounded by sea, superb seafood features highly in the cuisine of the Seychelles and is a must try when on a luxury villa holiday in the Seychelles. The creole cooking style of the Seychellois is a wonderful fusion of the multitude of cultural influences on the islands – curries and spices from India, wok cooking from China and gourmet cuisine from France, with a dash of African fire.
Best time to visit Seychelles
The climate in the Seychelles stays warm and pleasant all year round so it’s a good luxury holiday destination all year round.
From October to March the wind speeds average 8 to 12 knots and from May to September the brisker trade winds average 10 to 20 knots, bringing cooler windier conditions.
In April and October there tends to be periods of calm, warm weather, superb for diving and snorkelling.
The rainy season is from mid-November to mid-February. Showers can be heavy but rarely last very long.
