Destination Guide: North Island

About North Island

North Island, or Ile du Nord, sits like a jewel in the azure ocean 30km from the main island of Mahé, within the inner island group of the Seychelles. Four perfect white beaches fringe the lush tropical interior of coconut palms and takamaka trees and dramatic granite outcrops that soar 180m above the sea.

Crystal clear waters invite divers to explore the pristine filigree reefs and spectacular tropical fish. The island has a well-equipped PADI dive centre and knowledgeable dive instructors to show you the ropes.

North Island is a sanctuary where natural habitats, long neglected, have been rehabilitated so that endangered Seychelles flora and fauna could be reintroduced. The island operates in harmony with the nature and wildlife and runs several environmental programmes that guests can get involved with during their stay on the island.

The villas offer unashamed luxury and privacy, whilst blending into their beautiful environment and remaining sensitive to the fragile ecosystem they inhabit. Continuing programmes have enabled the reintroduction of rare species of birds, tortoises and native trees. Hawksbill and green turtles now nest on the island once more.

The focal point of North Island is The Piazza. The chic decked area is home to the lounge and bar and is illuminated with flaming torches when the sun goes down giving a magical quality. There is a laid back and relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a perfectly mixed cocktail under the stars.

North Island has plenty to keep guests as active as they would like to be – mountain bikes, kayaks, offshore fishing, a state-of-the-art gym, snorkelling or hiking the nature trails with an botanist. Alternatively, indulge in a relaxing massage in the privacy of your own villa.

Best places to eat and drink in North Island

The talented chefs use the freshest ingredients from the island’s own herb and vegetable garden to bring you wonderful gourmet creations. Guests can dine on the beach, at the Sunset Bar, in the restaurant or on the terrace of their own villa.

There are no mealtimes or menus. Food is discussed with the Executive Chef on arrival and choosing wine means picking one out from the well-stocked cellar.

Best time to visit North Island

The climate in the Seychelles stays warm and pleasant all year round so it’s always a good time to visit.

From October to March the wind speeds average 8 to 12 knots and from May to September the brisker trade winds average 10 to 20 knots, bringing cooler windier conditions.

In April and October there tends to be periods of calm, warm weather, superb for diving and snorkelling.

The rainy season is from mid-November to mid-February. Showers can be heavy but rarely last very long.

What we love about North Island
