The Finest Luxury Ski Chalets in France

Luxury Ski Chalets > France

Finding your perfect luxury ski chalet in France can seem harder than skiing a black run after a little too much vin et fromage. The French Alps are as epic in scale as in beauty. Home to the largest ski area in Europe (Les Trois Vallées), and the highest mountain in the Alps (Mont Blanc). Our expansive collection and consultative approach make finding a luxury chalet in France as easy as a Champagne Sunday.

The Best Luxury Chalets in the French Alps

We have scoured the finest ski resorts in France, evaluating every luxury ski chalet, for over a decade. We have done all the hard work for you, so you can browse the finest luxury ski chalets in the French Alps at your leisure. Just head to the chalet map and listings below.

The world’s foremost collection of luxury ski chalets is just the beginning of what’s on offer. We pride ourselves on our world-class service, from consultation to concierge. Our luxury chalet holidays come with a personal touch from the get-go. We can provide advice on which resort is best for you, where to go when you are there and much more.

Why Book Luxury Ski Chalets in France

Gliding over fresh snow, it will strike you there’s nothing like a luxury ski chalet holiday in France to revive spirits. There’s always time to lunch alfresco, accompanied by a glass or two of Vin Chaud, between ski runs. Before heading home via a glade of pine trees or an après ski bar.

Back at your luxury French ski chalet, dip into the hot tub with a glass of fizz as chefs prepare your meal. There’s no better way to unwind after a day of “exercise”.

Go for an evening stroll and you’ll find quaint villages, luxury boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants. French ski resorts tick all the boxes.

The French Alps offer some of the best skiing in the world. And they provide a huge variety of French luxury ski chalets to choose from. We have ultra-modern luxury chalets with huge floor-to-ceiling windows and contemporary features. On the other hand, we have beautiful traditional luxury chalets with cosy alpine wood interiors. Luxury ski chalets in France come equipped with everything you need to relax on a luxury ski holiday. Whether that’s a swimming pool, hot tubs, cinema room or a gym.

For choice on the slopes, the bigger, well-linked ski areas such as the Three Valleys (Courchevel, Meribel, Val Thorens, St Martin de Belleville) or the Portes de Soleil (Chatel, Morzine, Les Gets) offer endless skiing in France.

What We Love About Ski Resorts in France

Whether you are looking for a modern super-convenient ski resort or a charming medieval village that’s full of character, France has it all. And you’ll be happy whether you are seeking a luxury ski holiday or a trip to the mountains in summer.

For those seeking something more traditional, we recommend villages like Megève or Tignes les Brevières. Their ancient buildings are picturesque, and the places ooze character and French alpine charm.

Understanding Resorts with Luxury Ski Chalets in the French Alps

The French Alps are home to many of the largest and best ski areas in the world. Multiple resorts provide access to each ski area. Some resorts only provide access to one ski area, while some provide access to multiple areas. Our collection includes luxury chalets from all the top French ski resorts, and we can help you decide which resort suits you.

All French ski resorts offer Alpine charm and natural beauty, yet have a distinct je ne sais quoi. The information below can help you find your ideal resort, or feel free to get in touch for expert advice on where to go. To learn more about a specific resort, you can use the resort finder further down this page.

What are the Best Ski Resorts in France for Families?

Going for a family ski holiday is an adventure like no other. If you’ve not been to the Alps with your kids before, you will naturally want to go somewhere they will be safe. We know, from experience, that all resorts are child-friendly, with kids’ slopes, lessons and activities to keep them entertained. However, there are some things we recommend considering when booking a luxury French ski holiday for your family.

Firstly, you should look for resorts closer to airports. Maybe you love long transfers with your family, but we’d rather keep them as short as possible. The resorts in France that are closest to airports are Chamonix, Les Gets, Megeve and St Martin de Belleville. Transfers to each of those resorts are less than an hour and a half long.

Secondly, you should prioritise luxury chalets that are close to slopes/lifts, or have a driver service. Your kids may show promise of Olympic gold medals, but they may struggle to carry skis after a day of fun on the slopes. Just let us know you’re booking a family trip and we’ll point you in the right direction.

What are the Best Ski Resorts in France for Après Ski?

We love the French language, it’s synonymous with the finer things in life. Ballet, restaurant, café, sommelier and chauffeur start a long list of French words with no necessary translation. As keen skiers who have spent years in the Alps, “après ski” is a French term dear to our hearts.

Literally “after skiing”, yet meaning the hospitality, entertainment and cherished memories that occur off the slopes. We’ve had plenty of romantic moments in mountaintop restaurants, raucous nights dancing on tables, and everything in between. So we can give intimate advice on where you’ll find your ideal après ski atmosphere.

Each resort is different, but we’d be remiss without mentioning Val d’Isere. This is the birthplace of the infamous Mountaintop club La Folie Douce. And beyond the youthful spirit of the après scene here, it’s home to the beautiful Classicaval music festival. So whether you prefer Beyoncé or Bach, there’s something for everyone.

What is the Best Ski Resort in France for Reliable Snow?

When evaluating ski resorts in Europe and beyond, snow is at the top of the list for most people. Of course, we can’t predict the weather or promise snow, it comes and goes with the latest forecast. However, resorts in France are at many different altitudes. Higher altitude resorts are usually colder, and because of that, the moisture in the atmosphere is more likely to turn into snow.

Bearing that in mind, if a snow-covered resort is your top priority, higher-altitude resorts are the safer bet. The highest ski resorts in France are Val Thorens (2,300m), Tignes (2,100m) Val d’Isere (1,850m) and Courchevel 1850 (1,850m). The ski areas themselves are at higher altitudes than the resorts, so are likely to be white even if the resort is greener.

What to Look for in French Luxury Chalets

Choosing a ski resort in France is important. However, the luxury chalet itself is the most important factor. This is true whether you have decided on a resort or not. We have clearly labelled the distinct characteristics of each chalet in our collection, for you to compare features easily.

Luxury catered ski chalets are among the most popular in our collection. The appeal of gourmet (sometimes Michelin star) dining in the best French mountaintop properties is tantalising. Luxury ski-in/ski-out chalets are also in high demand. There’s nothing like taking your skis off, taking a shower and having a spa treatment before most people have put down their skis.

Our luxury chalets with hot tubs have some of the best mountain views in the world. And our luxury chalets with swimming pools are simply divine. If your looking for a luxury chalet with a gym, we have you covered. If your holiday isn’t complete without your dog, get in touch and we can suggest pet-friendly luxury ski chalets in the French Alps.

When is the Best Time to Visit Ski Resorts in France?

The ski season in most ski resorts in France runs from early/mid-December to mid/end April. Ski resorts with higher altitude ski areas such as Val d’Isere, Tignes and Val Thorens have the longest ski season. They can be open from late November to early May snow permitting.

Courchevel, Meribel, St Martin de Belleville tend to operate from mid-December to around the 3rd week of April. Morzine, Chatel and Les Gets in the Portes de Soleil ski area normally open around the 3rd week of December. And they close around the 1st or 2nd week of April. Chamonix normally operates from mid-December to mid-April, and Megève from the 3rd week of December to early-mid April.

Whilst winter is the best time to ski the French Alps, it’s also a fantastic destination in the summer months. The colours come alive with deep blue skies and bright green meadows painted with wildflowers. Resorts in the summertime see gorgeous warm and sunny weather and many are buzzing with life and activity. Our favourite summer alpine activities are mountain biking, hiking or just marvelling at the views.

Skiing in France

Ski resorts in France have been at the forefront of infrastructure development for years. Most French ski resorts have extremely modern, efficient lift systems.

France is home to some of the largest and best ski resorts in the world. The well-known ski resorts of Meribel and Courchevel in the 3 Valleys, Morzine in the Portes de Soleil and Val d’Isere are some of the best and most popular in the Alps. The ski areas are huge, the pistes are well-groomed and varied, the lifts are modern and fast and the villages are attractive. It’s hard to find fault and no wonder France is where you will find many of the best luxury ski chalets in the world.

The ski area of the Portes de Soleil encompasses the resorts of Chatel, Morzine, Les Gets and more. It even crosses the border into Switzerland. Together it includes 650km of pistes so the skiing options are almost endless.

The 3 Valleys is another well-known ski area and home to many of our French luxury ski chalets. It is a huge linked ski area servicing Courchevel, La Tania, Meribel, Val Thorens and St Martin de Belleville. It is a massive ski area spanning over 600km, one of the very largest in the world.
