What was your first ski experience?
My first skiing memories aren’t particularly fond ones. I think my parents took me with them when I was about 3 years old, so I spent the days in a French crèche surrounded by children speaking a different language and eating new strange-tasting food!
I would have been 4 when I put on my first set of skis and as far as I remember, I spent much of the time on my ski instructor’s shoulders!
Which is your favourite country and why?
I find it impossible to pick just one because each country I’ve been to has something unique I fall in love with.
I would love to go back to South Africa, exploring Sabi Sands and seeing all the beautiful animals in their natural habitat. It’s utterly magical.
For the snow, it would have to be France, and everything France offers. The food, the wine, the resorts, and the people – I love it.
Which is your favourite resort and why?
I’d have to say my favourite resort is Morzine. The skiing is fantastic – I’m a sucker for tree runs, and it doesn’t feel too commercialised. Plus, the bars are great fun…if you ever get the chance, go to Bar Robinson and try a pint of Mützig!
Which is your favourite chalet?
I love them all, how could you not! However, I think Zems Lodge in Morzine is my favourite. I may be partially biased because I’ve stayed there but I just love everything about it. It is so spacious, great for big groups and the decor is stunning.
It was so nice sitting in the swim spa with a glass of champagne and smelling the delicious aroma of supper being prepared inside. The beds are so comfortable, I slept like a baby every night I was there.
Where is next on your list?
I had planned a 6-month stint in South America before covid hit. So that remains #1 on my list.
More specifically, hiking in Patagonia.
What are your favourite activities to do off the slopes on your ski trips?
One of my all-time favourite things to do after a ski day, is slipping into an outdoor hot tub, especially the ones with a great view of the mountains.
I also love going to watch sports whether that be live or in the bars. For example, last time I was in Morzine, I went to watch an ice hockey match!
What is your funniest ski memory?
On my ski season, we did our training in Tignes and the first day we went up the mountain, we all hit sheet ice on one of the runs. It was like dominoes, one by one slipping over. When we all started trying and failing to stand up, my friend Heidi slipped again and knocked one of my teeth out with her helmet! Not so funny at the time…absolutely hilarious now!
