The uniquely beautiful Villa Arrighi is in a class of its own. This huge estate offers real seclusion and quiet, but with an arresting 360-degree view of the surrounding Tuscan valleys. The main house was once a farmhouse and watch tower, with parts of it dating back to the 11th century. However, step inside the ancient sandstone buildings and you’ll find a luxurious interior, which combines rustic good looks with uber-modern gadgets and design features.

The property easily swallows up a party of ten to twelve in its cavernous rooms. The covered outdoor dining area is the perfect spot to enjoy an Italian feast each evening, then head to the drawing room to enjoy a late-evening amaretto before bed. There is also a larger formal sitting room on the first floor with an imposing fireplace and double-height ceilings. As you would expect, the bedrooms are all beautifully furnished, with spa style ensuites and plenty of room for guests to enjoy a little time alone if they wish.

The real jewel in this property’s crown, however, must be the magnificent grounds. You will never tire of wandering among the ancient olive trees or relaxing in the stunning infinity pool which is built into the rocks and boasts its own lovely pool house and views out over the valley.

Eating alfresco will never be the same again after you’ve enjoyed a truly Italian experience at Villa Arrighi. There are numerous courtyards and terraces in which to enjoy a preprandial drink or two, as well as a bread oven – perfect for making your own pizzas, with a little help from the chef if you like!

Location

Villa Lauro is situated on a private 2,700-acre estate on the border of Umbria and Tuscany.

The nearest airport is Perugia, just 45 minutes drive away. Florence is around an hour and 45 minutes away and Pisa is 2 hours and 30 minutes away.

Rooms

Villa Arrighi sleeps up to 10 people in the five-bedroom main house and 2 people in a separate guest annexe.

Eating

Villa Lauro boasts a lovely and well-appointed kitchen, including sandstone worktops, as well as its own larder and pantry, which any keen cooks will be pleased to spend hours in, preparing meals made with fabulous local ingredients. The area is known for its wild foods and you can arrange to be taken truffle hunting, as well as foraging for local delicacies such as wild asparagus.

If you wish, a private chef is available, either to hire for an entire week at a time, or just for one-off special dinners or occasions.

On nights when you don’t fancy cooking there is also a private estate restaurant which serves wonderful, traditional Italian dishes and, if you prefer to eat in the comfort of your villa you can order from the house menu and wine list and have it delivered to your door – or even enjoy it poolside.

Kids

Children will be wowed by the 18m infinity pool with views out over the valley. With so much outside space in which to run round, kids of all ages will sleep well at night. It’s also possible to hire mountain bikes or to go boating on the estate.

Little lovers of pizza and pasta will be well catered for and any budding chefs will enjoy helping to use the bread oven in the grounds, which is perfect for cooking their own pizzas in.
