You could be one of the many individuals who have not heard of Andermatt before and, don’t worry we wouldn’t blame you. Previously home to the Swiss Army for them to undergo Mountain warfare training, this charming historic town has only recently made a revival. It is now home to one of the all-time best luxury ski hotels in the Alps – The Chedi Andermatt. Voted by the New York Times as one of the “52 Places to Go in 2014” Andermatt is well and truly coming into people’s radars and it’s clear why.
Unlike some of the other more well-known ski resorts, Andermatt has remained so typically Swiss you could think that you’ve gone back in time when you come to visit. With trains popping in and out of tunnels, cows shuffling around small mountain huts and people strolling through the cobbled street wrapped up from the cold, it is wonderfully picture-perfect.

Andermatt has not only come to our attention because of its idyllic atmosphere. The skiing is a joy, especially for families, who are less concerned with racking up huge distances each day and savouring the tranquillity and condition of the pistes. It is one of the most snow-reliable places in Switzerland and reaches up to an altitude of 2963m.
This resort is an off-piste skier’s dream. The wide free-riding areas and untouched powder routes are all accessed by a little red train that climbs the mountain, weaving in and out of 3 tunnels towards the ski lifts at Natschen and Oberalp. Or head in the other direction to Realp where the Swiss team trained for the Sochi Olympics.

However, it is without a doubt that the spectacular luxury ski hotel The Chedi has been the main reason Andermatt has been thrown into the world of Luxury Travel. The Chedi oozes luxury, style and opulence and is described as Swiss with an Asian influence. The dramatic 15ft lobby has hidden spaces with wood-burning fireplaces for you to enjoy as well as floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the huge swimming pool, which is surrounded by glass-encased fires. The Chedi has also become a popular destination for both guests and local for an après drink after a hard day on the mountain.
With the intention for more luxury properties to emerge in Andermatt, we’re sure this unique ski resort will be the next big thing. Keep a watch out!
