The chic French ski retreat of Megève has been an elegant luxury ski holiday destination for generations. There’s plenty to do here, as well as some fabulous luxury ski chalets to choose from. Whether you want a super luxury chalet with a chef, or a self-catered chalet, we have something to suit all tastes.
Megève has been a coveted holiday destination for generations of French families. Megève is unmistakably upscale with an excellent choice of luxury chalets to match. It oozes sophistication but has plenty of traditional alpine charm with a beautiful medieval village centre, complete with narrow, cobbled streets, central square and chic boutiques.
Luxury chalets in Megève are often offered on a property-only basis rather than with full in-house staff. Unlike other more seasonal luxury ski resorts, Megève is a true year-round destination. As a result, luxury holidays rentals in Megève are designed to be tailored to your needs. Be it private chefs, hosts or drivers, luxury chalets in Megève come with concierge teams to arrange services to suit each stay.
Since Megève attracts a wealth of discerning clientele, it also draws top chefs and hospitality professionals from superyachts and leading city restaurants. The result is an exceptionally strong freelance network. Therefore, when choosing a luxury chalet in Megève it’s best to focus on the property itself rather than the service inclusions. Our team would be delighted to help find the perfect property for your luxury holiday in Megève and tailor-make the services to suit you.
Megève is a longtime favourite destination the French elite, and this is reflected in its dining scene. The resort offers everything from Asian fusion and upscale Savoyard cuisine to lively brasseries and elegant cafés.
A popular second-home destination, especially for affluent Parisians and Genevans, Megève attracts restaurants with ties to these cities. Kinugawa brings its buzzy, Japanese-fusion from Paris into the Alps, while Le Tigrr Princesse offers chic Asian-inspired dining and cocktails with sister establishments in Paris and St Tropez.
There are eight Michelin-starred restaurants in Megève too, the most acclaimed being L’Auberge de Montmin and Flocons de Sel which boasts two and three stars respectively.
Parisian café culture is also strong in Megève; there are several inviting spots for an espresso and pastry in the sun.
Since Megève is developed on surrounding pastureland, the skiing reflects this. It is much gentler and more relaxed than many higher ski resorts. Expect mainly wide, open slopes and beautiful, scenic runs through the trees, rather than steep and challenging terrain. This makes it especially well-suited for beginners and improving skiers.
On paper, Megève is a relatively low-altitude resort at 1,123m rising to 2,350m. Despite this, it often has better conditions than other resorts at a similar altitude.
Why? Its proximity to Mont Blanc and elevated snowfall is part of the picture. Its terrain also helps. Because the ski area is made up of rolling pastureland rather than rocky mountains, it takes less snowfall to cover the ground and open the pistes. Even when snowfall is limited, Megève can operate more effectively than craggier resorts that require a deeper base. Furthermore, significant investment in the snow-making capacities helps maintain Megève’s conditions.
Outside of the immediate Megeve ski area, with the Mont Blanc Unlimited ski pass, you can also access skiing in Chamonix, about a 30/40 minute drive away. This is an excellent day trip for more advanced skiing, higher-altitude slopes and a contrasting, mountaineering atmosphere in Chamonix’s centre rather than Megève’s aristocratic glamour.
Megève’s ski area is split up into various areas, each with a different feel:
This is the largest and highest of Megève’s ski areas. There’s a real mix of slopes for all abilities but with some of the best learning areas for beginners. This area also links into the neighbouring luxury ski resort of St Gervais. There’s advanced and intermediate skiing up Mont Joux and Mont Joly on this side too.
Best known for having most of the tree-lined runs, this area is particularly great for aesthetic skiing and the choice for best visibility in poorer weather conditions.
Best pick during the busier peak weeks as it’s often a bit quieter but still offers great skiing and lovely views.
Megève is a strong choice for a luxury holiday in both summer and winter. For skiing, the main winter season runs from mid-December to mid-April, with January and February being the best for snow conditions.
In summer, June, July and August are the peak periods for hiking and multi-activity family holidays. Because Megève is within easy reach of Geneva, Paris and the South of France, it typically gets a bit busier at the weekend with second-home owners or visitors from these areas.
Megève’s town is full of character, with cobbled streets, Medieval buildings. The narrow streets are dotted with designer boutiques and smart restaurants. The very centre (the old town) is pedestrianised with horse-drawn carriages adding to the charm. Thanks to the resort’s relatively low altitude and more gentle surrounding hills, the village often feels bright and mild, even in winter.
Our selection of properties includes luxury chalets in the centre of Megève – such as Chalet Le Sarto and Chalet Fermes de Marie, which is connected to the five-star hotel of the same name. These are tucked behind the main streets, offering privacy while still being central.
Yes. The Mont d’Arbois is the most exclusive neighbourhood in Megève and is a prime location for a luxury ski-in/ski-out chalet. This premium area is home to several five-star luxury chalets and hotels with convenient slope access on blue and green runs; great for all abilities.
Absolutely. Megève is a fantastic destination for a luxury winter holiday, even if you aren’t skiing. It’s a charming town with chic shopping options and great eateries (without going up the mountain).
Megève also has the largest sports centre in the Alps (Le Palais) with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, ice rink (indoors and outdoors) and climbing walls. Last but certainly not least, although our luxury chalets in Megève boast a range of wellness facilities, there are also several high-end spas to indulge further.
