Lech has long been regarded as a top-tier, luxury ski resort. Shortly after the first ski lifts opened in the 1960s, it began attracting Dutch royalty, helping establish its reputation among elite travellers. This status was only propelled by annual visits from Princess Diana with William and Harry.
Despite its royal heritage, Lech is defined by understated luxury. Strict building regulations have preserved the village’s traditional character and alpine elegance. Rather than a place for show, a luxury ski holiday in Lech is about embracing the beautiful scenery, unspoilt village and quality time with loved ones.
The hamlet of Oberlech is home to some of Lech’s most exclusive luxury chalets in Lech. Originally a small group of farms located just up the mountainside, above the main village of Lech, Oberlech developed in the 1960s and 1970s into a prime ski-in/ski-out enclave.
In 1997, a network of private tunnels was completed, making the area above ground entirely car-free and even more exclusive. Several of the finest luxury chalets in Lech, including Uberhaus and The Arula Estate, are located here, offering privacy, prestige and true ski-in/ski-out access for all abilities.
One of the stand-out luxury chalets in Oberlech is Chalet 1551, which places guests’ wellbeing at the heart of the experience. With exceptional wellness facilities, an in-house masseuse and even an oxygen chamber, it is an ideal retreat for recovering after a day on the slopes or focusing on fitness and relaxation.
Lech sits within the superb Arlberg ski area, which is regarded as one of the world’s top ski regions. It is Austria’s largest connected ski area, with 300km of pistes, linking Lech and St Anton with the charming villages of Zürs, Stuben, St Christoph, Warth and Schröcken.
The Arlberg is known for excellent piste management, reliable snow, and outstanding off-piste. We also offer a selection of luxury chalets in St Anton and St Christoph, two other sought-after resorts in the region.
Lech is one of a handful of luxury ski resorts in Europe that closely manage slope capacity. By limiting the number of daily lift passes sold, it helps preserve both the quality of its groomed pistes and its reputation as a luxury ski destination.
The Arlberg offers a good variety of ski slopes for all abilities, with a good balance of blue and red runs, alongside extensive off-piste and freeriding options.
A popular ski day in Lech would be completing the White Ring, a 22km ski circuit linking Lech, Oberlech, Zürs and Zug. It can be completed in around half a day, though the marked viewpoints and lunch stops along the way make it easy to turn it into a full-day outing.
For a greater challenge, Lech is home to one of the steepest runs in the world. Langer Zug peaks at a gradient of 80%, drawing advanced skiers as well as those keen to explore the area’s impressive 200km of off-piste terrain, particularly on the St Anton side of the resort.
Lech sits at 1,450m and offers skiing up to 2,811m, making it a reliable high-altitude destination. Its area in the Tyrol has a distinct microclimate that is often colder and snowier than French or Swiss resorts at similar elevations. As a result, snow records and conditions in the Arlberg are often significantly stronger, making a luxury ski holiday in Lech an excellent choice for those seeking some of the best snow in the Alps.
Lech represents Austrian hospitality at its most refined. Many chalets’ uniforms are akin to the traditional dirndls, with the teams bringing genuine enthusiasm for the local culture, produce and mountain way of life.
Developed as a luxury destination, many ski chalets in Lech are offered on a catered basis. Therefore, most luxury ski holidays to Lech would involve a beautifully prepared breakfast, with both cooked and continental options served by your private chef and host before a day on the slopes.
After a day on the slopes, in the village, or in the spa, return to your chalet for an elegant afternoon tea with coffee, freshly baked treats and champagne, followed by canapés, aperitifs and a multi-course dinner.
With high-quality catering in Lech’s luxury ski chalets for breakfast and dinner, many of Lech’s more extravagant dining experiences (outside luxury ski chalets) are found on the mountain, perfect for lunches. A particular favourite is The Balmalp, known for its lively atmosphere, large pizzas, sunset terrace views and upbeat DJ sets.
In the centre of Lech, many evening restaurants are relaxed, family-run establishments. For a more elevated dining experience while on your luxury ski holiday in Lech, several five-star hotels in town offer exceptional restaurants. Chalet Aurelio is an excellent option for those wanting both privacy and service, as it is connected to the outstanding Hotel Aurelio. This combines the exclusivity of a private luxury chalet in Lech with the facilities of a five-star hotel to make the most of for lunches or chef nights off.
With its aesthetic village, understated luxury and beautiful scenery, Lech is especially magical at Christmas. It offers a fairytale festive setting for a White Christmas away from the pressures of hosting at home.
Lech is a snow-sure resort with a long winter season, typically running from early December to late April. March is an especially good time to visit, with longer, sunnier days and quieter slopes.
Luxury holidays to Lech in summer are also becoming increasingly popular. In the warmer months, Lech remains the perfect place for peaceful relaxation, fresh mountain air and striking alpine scenery.
Lech is a lovely resort to visit, even if not an avid skier. There are cross-country trails, hiking routes, boutique shops and an ice rink. Many mountain restaurants can also be reached by lift as a pedestrian, so it’s easy for the group to meet up for lunch.
If staying in a luxury ski chalet in Oberlech, it’s most tempting to relax, enjoy the setting and watch the skiers pass by. If your group includes beginners, non-skiers can often see them progressing on the gentle blue runs through Oberlech.
Our team has been curating exceptional luxury holidays to Lech for over 15 years and would be delighted to recommend the finest chalets in Oberlech, complete with prime locations and extensive wellness facilities for skiers and non-skiers alike.
Lech is well known as a luxury ski resort for the elite, and its pricing reflects this. Nevertheless, the standard of hospitality and luxury chalets in Lech is exceptional, and the level of experience warrants the price tag.
If you want access to the Arlberg at a more competitive price point, our luxury chalets in St Anton and St Christoph provide excellent alternatives.
Après-ski in Lech echoes the nature of the town: refined, elegant and understated. Think champagne rather than steins of beer.
Neighbouring St Anton is better known for a more lively après-ski in the likes of the infamous Krazy Kanguruh and MooserWirt. A luxury ski chalet in St Anton may be a better choice if après-ski is a key part of your trip.
