Destination Guide: Meribel
Méribel is a pretty, tastefully-designed Alpine village right in the heart of the extensive 3 Vallées ski area. Incorporating Courchevel and Val Thorens plus a number of smaller villages, the 3 Vallées ski area is the largest in the world with a colossal 600km of pistes.
Being located in the middle valley and with the fast, efficient lift system, you have easy access to even the farthest reaches of the piste map.
With such an enormous ski area at your ski tips, there are plenty of runs for all levels of skier, from gentle wide open cruising to challenging blacks and punishing moguls. There is so much to choose from, enough to keep most skiers occupied their whole skiing career.
There are some very good gentle nursery slopes for beginners and children, particularly around the Altiport, with a multitude of excellent ski schools.
Although Méribel itself is only at an altitude of 1450m, there is fast access to higher slopes so there is nearly always good snow to be found even late in the season.
Best places to eat and drink in Meribel
Méribel has a buzzing après-ski scene, with the piste-side Rond Point having live bands in the afternoons, and many of the bars in town getting lively later on. There are also a few more sophisticated options for a calmer drink.
There are many mid-range restaurants to choose from, but probably the best food is to be found at the hotels in town – try the Grand Coeur or the Allodis. The Escale restaurant in the Altiport hotel is also highly regarded.
Best time to visit Meribel
The season normally runs from the first week of Dec to the last week of April. Please note that there may be a limited lift system in the first couple of weeks if the snow is a little late.
What we love about Meribel
We love the combination of the pretty village, the vibrant après-ski scene and Méribel’s superb central position in the vast 3 Vallées ski area, giving convenient access to the largest ski area in the world.
