Destination Guide: Villars
Renowned as a family friendly ski resort for its great beginners’ slopes and plethora of excellent ski schools, Villars is a top choice but not as busy as its neighbour, Verbier.
The Alpine town is a delightful place for a week or long weekend away. Traditional Swiss chalets, sprinkled all over the side of a mountain among the pines, all the way down to the pretty town centre make it a real ‘winter wonderland’ destination.
Villars is traditionally thought of as a good place for beginners and families, and it certainly is those things. However, lots more advanced skiers are now flocking there to enjoy the skiing up on the Diablerets glacier and also between the slopes.
Villars is very family friendly, with excellent ski schools and free passes for under-nines. The friendly welcome extends to most of the cafes and restaurants, too. Particularly worth a visit with children is L’Etable, a barn converted into a café in which one half houses diners, and the other donkeys!
Away from the slopes there are lots of activities for kids. Nearby Adventure Labyrinth is the largest natural labyrinth in the world and is sure to tire little legs out ready for bed. They’ll also love the indoor ice rink in Villars and the outdoor one in Gryon.
Best places to eat and drink in Villars
The town itself boasts some really good bars and eateries. It’s recently become something of a celeb haunt thanks to the top-notch restaurants here. There are lots of places where you can find wonderful local specialities such as fondues and rostis. One of the most popular is Alpe Fleurie where you can enjoy fine food in relaxed surroundings. As well as a plethora of European restaurants, Villars also has Thai and Mexican outlets. La Cantina del Toro is particularly worth a visit.
The centre of town hosts a good selection of bars, too. We particularly like the very chic Moonboot Lounge on Rue Centrale with its imaginative cocktail list and the lively Charlie’s bar. For a quieter drink in a hotel bar with amazing views try Murphy’s bar at Hotel Bristol.
Best time to visit Villars
Situated on the south side of a mountain face, Villars has a slightly warmer climate than some resorts but still offers snow-sure skiing throughout the season.
The winter season runs from the 21st of December to around the 21st of April
