‘Breathtaking’ doesn’t begin to describe this luxury ski-in/ski-out chalet in Cervinia. Brand new for winter 2023/24 season, Chalet Il Gufo, Cervinia, is perfectly located to enjoy outstanding views of the Matterhorn and designed to hold its own in its spectacular surroundings.

The chalet is reached via a ‘secret’ tunnel, which only enhances the feeling that you’ve stepped through a magic mirror somehow to this bolthole in the snow. Built in traditional style but conceived in a thoroughly modern way, the design makes the most of glass and natural materials for a pared-back look in a neutral and monochrome palette.

The main living space is cathedral-esque in its design, with vaulted ceiling, mezzanine space overlooking the main room, and huge floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Matterhorn outside. A modern fireplace and sumptuous seating area provide space to relax after a day on the slopes, while a long, artisan wood table is the perfect backdrop to wonderful meals and fine wines, enjoyed with friends.

But while so much of this chalet feels on a grand scale, we love how the tiny details are taken care of, too, from the mezzanine games space to the reading nook, covered in cushions, looking out onto the snow.

As well as the main entertaining spaces, there are lots of areas to escape to for some class-A relaxation. We love the super-smart games room, with cinema, bar, lounge area, pool table and table football – something to keep everyone busy, as well as the mezzanine games area, also with private bar and games table stocked with cards and board games.

If you like your downtime a little more energetic, head to the gym for a workout, or to the indoor swimming pool to do a few lengths under the watchful eye of the mountain. For those with achy legs post-ski, an afternoon in the steam room and outdoor hot tub should restore your muscles to full health ready for another day on the slopes.

Each of the calming, neutral, en-suite bedrooms has its own little surprise, from climbing walls to hanging seats to huge bathtubs hidden behind a wall. Before you retire to the comfiest, cosiest beds you can imagine, grab a nightcap from the bar before heading out to the huge balcony to wish the stars and the Alps goodnight.

Location

Chalet Il Gufo is a luxury ski chalet in Cervinia, accessed via a gated road and a private tunnel under the piste. The chalet has ski-in/ski-out access on the red Cieloalto-Cervinia piste and Cervinia is a snow-sure resort, so you’re guaranteed to maximise your time on the powder here.

Il Gufo has views of the Matterhorn and a peaceful forest location with a stream babbling nearby. But it’s also well located for everything you need. The chalet is directly opposite the main lift and just a 5 minute (downhill) walk to the centre of town, and 8-10 minute walk back up to the chalet.

The nearest airports are Turin (1.5 hours away); Milan Malpensa (2 hours away, with Milan Linate just a little further on) and Geneva (just under 3 hours away). The nearest train station is at Chatillon.

Eating

Chalet Il Gufo, Cervinia, has a well-equipped luxury kitchen and a wonderful dining area with statement lighting for atmospheric meals and astounding mountain views from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

You’ll wake to a hearty breakfast each morning, prepared by your private chef, to set you up for the slopes. When you return from the snow, afternoon tea is waiting for you.

There’s just enough time to enjoy all the chalet has to offer before drinks and canapés are served and then you’ll sit down to a gourmet evening meal. On the chef’s day off, Il Gufo’s concierge will be happy to make bookings for you at the best restaurants nearby.

If travelling with children, your chef can prepare a dedicated children’s tea earlier in the evening so that kids don’t need to be on ‘best behaviour’ during a long meal and you can relax and enjoy your dinner at your leisure post-bedtime.

Kids

There’s so much to entertain kids of all ages in this luxury family-friendly ski chalet. The games room has something to please everyone, with home cinema, table football and pool table that doubles as table tennis. The games room’s bar also has a pic n mix bar where you can help yourself to popcorn or sweets before setting down for a film. Apple TV with Disney Plus and Netflix means you’re sure to find something for everyone to watch.

Children will love the kids’ bunk room, with four queen-size beds, a climbing wall and its own secret den. The room has its own en-suite loo as well as a shower room, and the balcony has beautiful views of the forest. Two further bedrooms can be configured as twins, too, if you have lots of children in your party.

Indeed, the whole chalet has been designed with children in mind. There’s a reading alcove that’s perfect for story time and on the mezzanine floor is a games table and a second TV so there’s always somewhere for everyone to escape to.
