With high-altitude slopes, long winter seasons, and a vast ski area which connects to Val d’Isère, Tignes is widely regarded as one of the best ski areas in the Alps.
Tignes began as a practical, purpose-built ski resort rather than a traditional alpine village. However, in recent years, the high-quality chalets of its elegant neighbour Val d’Isère have rubbed off. Tignes is evolving into a more up-market destination with an increasing number of luxury chalets, stylish apartments and fine dining to match.
Tignes is made up of five villages, all connected by pistes and a free 24-hour bus network, making it easy to move between the different areas during your luxury ski holiday to Tignes.
Tignes Val Claret is the highest of the Tignes villages, so it has the quickest access to the highest altitude slopes like the Grande Motte glacier. It is likely the image most likely to come to mind when thinking about a ski holiday to Tignes: 1970s apartment blocks that aren’t the most postcard-friendly or traditionally ‘alpine’. Though not particularly attractive, the area is vibrant and convenient for the ski slopes.
On the other side of a lake from Val Claret is Tignes Le Lac, which makes an excellent base in Tignes. Significant investment in recent years has improved the look and feel of Tignes Le Lac: apartment blocks have been given more aesthetic chalet facades, and the main road through the centre has been moved underground, creating a more pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.
Tignes Le Lac is a popular area for bars, restaurants and ski school meeting points and the lifts from here provide quick and easy access across the wider Tignes-Val d’Isère ski area.
Most of Tignes’ best luxury chalets are in Le Lac, including Chalet Sneg, which boast a great location near the piste, expert catered service, plus an outdoor hot tub and a sauna.
There’s also a growing selection of luxury apartments in Tignes Le Lac, such as Apartment Tajj and Apartment Ornate, which offer excellent quality at a modest price point.
Tignes Lavachet, Les Boisses and Les Brévières are quite similar, and the quietest of the Tignes villages, with only a couple of bars, casual restaurants and a supermarket for amenities.
These villages have a more traditional, alpine architectural style. Though a bit lower down in altitude, there’s still good access to the wider ski area via the high-speed lifts.
Tignes is part of the exceptional Tignes-Val d’Isère area. This is, without doubt, one of the world’s greatest ski areas, with over 300km of pistes for all standards of skier, as well as a host of luxury ski chalets. With a large proportion of slopes above 2,000m, Tignes is one of the Alps’ highest and most reliable luxury ski resorts for snow conditions, making it a safe and secure choice for your luxury ski holiday.
Tignes is a strong choice for mixed-ability groups and beginners, with 56% of pistes being green or blue grade. This gives newer skiers plenty of space to build confidence.
Many of these learning pistes are higher up in the ski area, which helps maintain great snow quality all season long.
It is worth noting that it can be particularly cold for younger children, especially in December and January.
Our favourite time for a luxury family ski holiday to Tignes is later in the season over Easter, when there are longer, sunnier days, quieter slopes, but still fantastic snow conditions.
For strong skiers, Tignes-Val d’Isère offers challenging red and black runs such as the infamous La Face. Or, there’s a wealth of off-piste options to explore, particularly with a ski guide.
Tignes also offers (limited) summer glacier skiing on Grande Motte, alongside hiking, climbing, cycling, rafting and other mountain activities.
We also offer a large range of luxury chalets in neighbouring Val d’Isère. Let us know your requirements, and we can shortlist the best accommodation options for your next luxury ski holiday.
Yes, Tignes has a lively après-ski scene. On the slopes, above Val d’Isère La Daille, is the original La Folie Douce; an iconic option for a long lunch at La Fruitiere – followed by music and dancing on tables. If you’re staying in a luxury chalet in Tignes, remember to make sure to ski home before the last lifts!
Back in Tignes, Cocoricos is the next party place, matching the energy of La Folie Douce, while bars such as Le Bollin, Le Loop and Grizzly’s are better for a slightly more relaxed drink, but still with live music and buzzy DJ sets.
Continuing late into the evening, Melting Pot and Jack’s Club are open until 4am, keeping nightlife going well beyond dinner.
Tignes is located at the far end of the Tarentaise Valley, so transfers are longer than many other luxury ski resorts in the Alps.
Chambéry is usually around two hours away, while Geneva and Grenoble are often three hours or more. Transfer times can increase, especially on peak weeks such as Christmas, New Year and February school holidays.
When booking your luxury ski holiday to Tignes, we can help arrange reliable private road transfers and, for guests who want to shorten the journey, helicopter transfers too.
Though Tignes is known for ski enthusiasts, it offers plenty for non-skiers, especially if you enjoy active mountain experiences.
Options include dog sledding, paragliding, snowshoeing, ice driving, snowmobiling, ice driving and ice skating. There is also a large sports centre, Le Lagon, with an extensive wellness and fitness area.
Absolutely. As Tignes has grown into a stronger luxury ski resort, its restaurant scene has improved significantly. On the mountain, Le Panoramic, set at 3,030m, makes an excellent lunch stop with unbeatable views.
Across the Tignes-Val d’Isere ski area there are also many fantastic restaurants such as La Fruitière, La Peau de Vache and L’Edelweiess.
Tignes also offers plenty of casual eateries, from pizzerias and crêperies to traditional Savoyard spots.
For foodies, we can find the perfect luxury catered chalet in Tignes with breakfast and dinners served by your private chef, leaving lunches free for long mountain meals.
