What we love about Spain
We love the pleasant climate in holiday season, particularly in the south and the Balearics, where the mild evenings are made for sitting outside until midnight enjoying wine under the stars.
Best places to eat and drink in Spain
Spain is best known for its tapas, small ‘tasting’ plates to be shared. Indeed, there’s so much to taste here, small plates are one of the easiest ways to ensure you sample the best of everything, from wonderfully salty cured hams, to fresh seafood to artisan cheeses. The Mediterranean cuisine is full of flavour but not too heavy on the stomach – one has to have the energy for dancing after dinner, after all!
In drinking terms, Spain is renowned for its robust reds, sherrys and Cava. Wine fans should head to Rioja to visit the vineyards or to Andalusia for sherry tours.
Spain has for years been home to some of the best restaurants in the world. When staying in a self-catered luxury villa it is particularly worth a special stop-over at El Celler de can Roca in Girona, where you sit around a walled garden behind glass enjoying the modern Spanish dishes, paired with various sherries, and also Mugaritz up in San Sebastian, worth a trip just to try the famous starter of potatoes, dressed up to look like very convincing stones – one is almost too scared to bite into them!
