Destination Guide: St. Anton

About St. Anton

St. Anton is one of my all-time favourite ski resorts. The skiing is fantastic, especially for intermediate and advanced skiers, with high, sunny bowls and an extensive ski area which includes Lech and Zürs on the same ski pass. Although not especially high, St. Anton has a very good snow record and is one of the best resorts for snow reliability.

Located in the Arlberg region of Austria, St. Anton is somewhat of a mecca for keen skiers – and for good reason. There is a huge amount of easily accessible and varied terrain, dramatic scenery and endless freeriding possibilities. There are very few places in Europe better to be on a powder day.

For beginners, there are a couple of nursery areas and the baby slope at Nasserein has a new moving carpet lift.

The lift system has been regularly improved in recent years and is now one of the best, rivalling some of the super-efficient French resorts. As a result, queues have been reduced significantly.

The ski areas of Lech and Zürs are accessible by bus and are well worth the trip. They tend to be quieter and the scenery is glorious.

St. Anton itself is a pretty car-free village of traditional Tyrolean buildings and is full of energy and character.

Best places to eat and drink in St. Anton

St. Anton has earned a reputation as one of the liveliest ski resorts. There is a buzz about the place, which becomes evident once the après-ski starts (which is quite early in St. Anton).

The Mooserwirt, positioned on the piste, is quite an experience – one that everybody should do at least once in their life. What starts as a perfectly normal restaurant and bar at lunch time becomes a boot-stomping oompah-beerfest by mid afternoon. Worth a look, even as a spectator.

There are plenty of dining options up the mountain, and the Verwallstube at Galzig, with its superb food and excellent views, is well recommended.

Down the mountain, the Village Museum restaurant serves excellent sophisticated food in elegant panelled rooms.

Best time to visit St. Anton

The season usually runs from the 1st week of December to the 3rd week of April.

What we love about St. Anton

We love the wonderfully varied terrain and beautiful views in every direction.
