Destination Guide: Morzine

About Morzine

Skiing home through the pine trees, a glass of vin chaud at a funky bar, a cluster of old stone buildings beside the river: that’s Morzine. This stylish French ski resort sits within the extensive Portes du Soleil ski region and is a buzzing leisure hub all year round. Popular with discerning adrenaline junkies, particularly the British, Morzine has grown to the size of a small town without losing its French alpine charm.

Non-skiers have a variety of swimming pools, skating rinks and indoor sports to keep them busy, and there are plenty of child-friendly facilities such as the children’s club, sledge runs, and the new Aquariaz water park in Avoriaz. In Summer, Morzine bustles with walkers, cyclists and fresh air enthusiasts. The restaurants and bars cross the range from traditional and rustic to cool and contemporary, and there are events all year round such as the Rock the Pistes music festival in March.

Skiers have the choice of heading up on the Super Morzine cable car to get across to Avoriaz, and beyond to Chatel and into Switzerland, or to explore the numerous local pistes extending as far as Les Gets on the other side. There are several nursery slopes around Morzine, and some easy beginners’ pistes at Mont Ranfolly, whilst experts can test their nerves on the near-vertical, mogul-covered Swiss Wall.

Morzine is one and a half hours from Geneva airport by car, and an hour from Sion airport.

Best places to eat and drink in Morzine

Some of the most sophisticated restaurants in Morzine can be found within its top hotels, such as the Atelier at the Hotel Samoyede. Here, the chef whips up delectable creations such as cod steak with saffron fish broth, and duck breast filled with foie gras, served with crispy polenta. The restaurant’s wine cellar has 200 different labels to choose from.

La Chamade is another highly rated gourmet destination producing a mouth-watering array of classic French cuisine.

Morzine also has plenty of mid-range restaurants serving pizzas and local specialities such as tartiflette and fondue. And for a few sociable drinks in the evening, try the East-meets-West vibe of the Tibetan Café before heading to The Cavern where a DJ keeps the party going until 2am.

Best time to visit Morzine

The Portes de Soleil ski area is fully open from around 21 December to 27 April, although some local Morzine lifts are open a week or two earlier. In summer, the Morzine lifts are open mid June to beginning of September. The busiest month of the year is February.

What we love about Morzine

We love the après ski mayhem at Le Tremplin – a buzzing piste-side bar with a party vibe. Just find your groove, ski boots and all, but don’t get so relaxed that you go home without your skis and helmet.
