Destination Guide: Spain
Rest and relaxation is taken as seriously as fiestas and flamenco in Spain, which is a fine way to go about life, we think, particularly on holiday. The country’s patchworked history means luxury villas in Spain are almost always a skip, hop and a jump from medieval ruins, and tiny traditional towns – perhaps even from some of the world’s finest museums and galleries – but you can intersperse the high culture with plenty of sitting back and soaking up the atmosphere.
It’s a country high on colour and zest for life. You’ll see it running through the cuisine, the art and the festivals, but the Spaniards know a good siesta is what sees you through the dancing until dawn.
Whether you’re soaking up the sights in Barcelona and Madrid, hiking in the wild heart of the country, exploring the Moorish towns of the south, sunning yourself on a beach in the Balearics or simply relaxing by the pool in your luxury villa, you can be sure you’ll find a lovely bar or tapas restaurant around the corner when you feel in need of a restorative break.
Luxury villa holidays in Spain give you the chance to explore beautiful parts of the country but with a super-comfortable base to return to for the evening, whether that’s for a sophisticated dinner and a dip in the pool or a quick siesta before your own private fiesta with friends.
Madrid and Barcelona are the two largest airports in the country but there are smaller airports all over the regions that will get you to your luxury villa in no time, including Malaga, serving Marbella and environs. Several of the islands, such as Ibiza and Mallorca have their own airports, too.
Best places to eat and drink in
Spain is best known for its tapas, small ‘tasting’ plates to be shared. Indeed, there’s so much to taste here, small plates are one of the easiest ways to ensure you sample the best of everything, from wonderfully salty cured hams, to fresh seafood to artisan cheeses. The Mediterranean cuisine is full of flavour but not too heavy on the stomach – one has to have the energy for dancing after dinner, after all!
In drinking terms, Spain is renowned for its robust reds, sherrys and Cava. Wine fans should head to Rioja to visit the vineyards or to Andalusia for sherry tours.
Spain has for years been home to some of the best restaurants in the world. When staying in a self-catered luxury villa it is particularly worth a special stop-over at El Celler de can Roca in Girona, where you sit around a walled garden behind glass enjoying the modern Spanish dishes, paired with various sherries, and also Mugaritz up in San Sebastian, worth a trip just to try the famous starter of potatoes, dressed up to look like very convincing stones – one is almost too scared to bite into them!
Best time to visit
It very much depends where you’re going. Central areas such as Madrid are very hot in summer and very cold in winter, while the south is warm most of the year, and the Atlantic coast can be quite damp and misty.
In general the best times are May to June and September to October when temperatures are mild for most of the country but the tourist spots haven’t yet been descended upon by the masses. In August, most Spaniards are on holiday which means the coast is busy but the cities can be fairly quiet, great if you are looking for a blend of sightseeing and relaxation on a luxury holiday in Spain.
What we love about
The very pleasant climate in holiday season, particularly in the south and the Balearics, where the mild evenings are made for sitting outside until midnight enjoying wine under the stars.
