Croatia offers something for everyone, from glitz and glamour in peak season, to natural wonders all year round – there are even dolphins to be spotted off Istria – and a burgeoning food scene, with restaurants in the last few years beginning to earn their richly deserved Michelin stars, and with fresh truffles and good olive oil aplenty adorning market stalls.
There’s so much to explore in Croatia. One holiday really isn’t enough and luxury villas and hotels abound.
If pretty port towns and azure waters lapping beaches is what you’re after, the Dalmatian coast will have lots to offer you.
Those seeking a little waterside nightlife and some daytime culture in the Old Town might enjoy the charming city of Split.
For an island break, Hvar has plenty to tempt tourists from the glamourous cafes and superyachts of Hvar town to the sleepy villages dotted around the island. Brac has a quiet charm and unspoiled beaches that makes it perfect for a relaxing holiday.
Then there’s Istria, a tale of two peninsulas, really, with its secret coves and coastal villages (known as Blue Istria) and its hilltop towns and wineries occupying the hills inland (Green Istria).
Culture vultures will be in their element wandering the scenic city walls of Dubrovnik and taking in the winding limestone streets and colourful squares.
It’s so easy to get about here, you can do a bit of everything, soaking up the culture, history and food of Croatia (as well as a goodly amount of wine!) but still leaving plenty of time to enjoy your luxury villa, and its views and pool in the Croatian sun.
The combination of fascinating history, both ancient and modern, and natural beauty, from crystal clear waters lapping pebbled beaches, to amazing mountains and UNESCO-listed national parks.
Peak season is July and August, and that’s when Croatia is buzzing with life. It can be fairly hot at that time though, with temperatures well into the 30s. If you’re not a fan of the heat, the ‘shoulder seasons’ (May to June and September to October) are great times to go, when things are a little quieter and the weather a little more temperate. It’s always a little cooler in the north than on the Adriatic coast, too.
You’ll find fabulous seafood dishes all over Croatia as well as the chance to indulge in some of the best olive oil, wine and fresh truffles in the world. If you want to eat in a truly local way Pašticada (marinated beef and gnocchi) and Tartufi (creamy truffle pasta) are always a good bet.
If you’re in Dubrovnik, it’s worth making time for a meal at 360°, a Michelin-starred restaurant, built into the historic town walls and with views out over the old port.
Serious food fans should not miss out on an evening at Pelegrini in Sibernik, which has a renowned tasting menu featuring local ingredients from oysters and sea snails to veal, and lets you select the exact dishes you want to try. For something smaller but no less tasty, Torito Food Bar in Split offers global tapas and great cocktails at the heart of the Diocletian’s Palace.
You’ll find excellent independent restaurants with sea views and the freshest of fish dotted all over the Croatian coast. Afar in the tiny harbour town of Fosa Zadar is a great example: stunning waterfront views, plenty of historic atmosphere and a delicious ever-changing menu based on that morning’s catch.
