Destination Guide: Zermatt
Car-free Zermatt was once a rustic farming village and those roots are still clearly evident in the town today. There’s a real mix of the old and new, with ancient wooden luxury ski chalets with slate roofs forming narrow lanes as well as some modern areas of town with upmarket boutiques for the well-heeled international visitors. The result is a charming but cosmopolitan feel with plenty of character.
Zermatt is best known for the iconic Matterhorn which helps to make the already spectacular views into something close to perfection.
The skiing in Zermatt also won’t disappoint. The area links with Cervinia on the Italian side making a huge and accessible ski area, and even an early intermediate can make the trip over. The terrain is varied and is particularly good for intermediates on a luxury ski holiday in Zermatt as there is an abundance of red runs, most of which are fairly gently.
The facilities for beginners and the lift system in general has seen some significant improvements in recent years so many of the old bottlenecks have been alleviated.
One thing you notice when skiing in Zermatt is the altitude. Much of the skiing is above 2500m and goes up to a very lofty 3899m, so the snow tends to last very well as the temperatures stay low.
So overall Zermatt has bags of charm, excellent skiing and great restaurants and plenty of luxury ski chalets – not surprising it is often voted the world’s best ski resort.
Best places to eat and drink in Zermatt
One of the real draws of Zermatt is the wonderful selection of mountain restaurants. Zermatt boasts 38 mountain restaurants and the standard across the board is extremely high. The spectacular scenery, the authentically restored traditional alpine farm buildings and the fantastic regional cuisine are a winning combination.
For views of the Matterhorn and excellent regional food in beautifully-quaint rustic surroundings try one of the restaurants at Findeln, below Sunnegga – Findlerhof, Chex Vrony, The Paradies and Adler are all highly recommended.
On chefs night off at your luxury ski chalet, head into town and you’ll find every type of restaurant from haute cuisine to rustic regional or contemporary chic. Try the innovative Italian cuisine at the Michelin-starred Ristorante Capri on the top floor of the Petit Cervin Hotel.
Similarly, there is a wide choice of bars and clubs and something to suit all tastes.
Best time to visit Zermatt
Zermatt has one of the longest ski seasons in the Alps due to the high altitude of the skiing.
The lifts normally run from mid November to Early May.
What we love about Zermatt
We love the mountain restaurants – probably the best in the world - complimented by those spectacular views of the Matterhorn. Throw in a charming village and superb skiing and Zermatt is a winning combination.

The Best Luxury Ski Chalets in Zermatt
There are a handful of chalets that offer guests a week to remember in all their opulence and glory but if you're after something off the scale in style and chic then look no further than Chalet Zermatt Peak.
Resembling a Bond villain’s lair, Chalet Zermatt Peak couldn’t be more appropriately named. Its architectural wizardry juts out from the mountainside and cascades down the mountain effortlessly. Its five bedrooms are immaculately appointed making it certainly one the most dramatic luxury ski chalets in the Alps, not just Zermatt.
The architects have really gone to town here with the finishing; walnut floors and matching bespoke beds fill every bedroom; the unique design of the spa is spectacular. Bi-fold doors glide across the top of the bubbling pool splitting the elements in two with precision and grace.
Floor to ceiling windows bring you acres of light and the most staggering view of the valley beyond and village below. Whether lying in bed or having a canapé in the lounge prepared by one of the talented chefs, you will not be disappointed with this glorious luxury ski chalet in Zermatt.
If stylish interior chic with a homely ambiance is what you crave from your luxury ski holiday, then Chalet Grace will inspire even the toughest design critic. Antique furniture; Baroque mirrors; wrought iron balustrades and super comfy sofas give a cosy yet sophisticated feel and the awesome art collection is unsurpassed in the valley.
Built using modern construction materials, the choice of pale wood throughout and painted walls affords Chalet Grace a very different but very cosmopolitan feel than your traditional Alpine retreat.
It is light, bright and airy and, as you’ll see from the photographs not shy of a spectacular view. Features such as an outdoor hot tub, pool table, card table, cinema room and well-stocked bar will be sure to fill any remaining time you may have after skiing.
Chalet Grace lives up to its name with serious aplomb and is certainly one of Zermatt’s finest luxury ski chalets.
Chalet Les Anges
Known as the Chalet of Angels, this divine luxury ski chalet in the pretty Petit Village area of Zermatt is like a gift from heaven.
Decked out in carefully aged wood, Italian marble and even effective use of bamboo, Chalet Les Anges combines numerous global influences with ease and purpose.
Seraphim and Cherubim are a couple of the angels chosen to represent the seven bedrooms on offer at Chalet Les Anges. Each room has its own theme and unique colour scheme to echo the personality of their guardian angels.
The lounge area on the top floor is divine; combining traditional carpentry with modern furnishings and accoutrements all wrapped up in a warm fluffy blanket of Swiss hospitality.
Forming part of the Seven Heavens Project, Chalet Kilimanjaro is arguably the classiest luxury ski chalet in Zermatt. Located right in the middle of the pedestrian area of the village, Kilimanjaro couldn’t be better situated. Its location is a minor detail when you consider what on offer within the walls of this most spectacular of chalets.
With its stalactite fireplace falling from the matured wood ceiling in the lounge accompanied beautifully by a circular sofa and neighbouring library, this centrepiece is where you’ll spend a lot of time throughout your stay.
Deciding whether to go to the spa area with accompanying fireplace, and adjoining lounge or the neighbouring cinema room with its own bar might not be the only first world problem you’ll have at Kilimanjaro.
The master bedroom is more of a showroom suite than a bedroom. Its own suspended fireplace provides the centrepiece, designer corner sofa and, should you be able to take your eyes off the incredible view from of one of five patio doors onto the double aspect balconies, then there’s a large flat screen TV for your use too.
Each of the five bedrooms is a work of interior art complemented unusually but comfortingly with deep pile carpets throughout making the rooms tricky to leave each morning.
At Chalet Kilimanjaro every thought has been given to enhance your stay and offer you a level of luxury and comfort unsurpassed for a ski chalet in such an idyllic location.
Luxury Ski-In/Ski-Out Chalets in Zermatt
There are few things more enjoyable on your luxury ski holiday than being able to clip in the skis and head off down the piste whilst returning later that afternoon to the back door without walking a step. Chalet White Pearl offers just such a service. Located in Winklematten Chalet White Pearl is one of the very few luxury ski-in/ski-out chalets in Zermatt.
Being able to ski in and ski out is nice but really nice if you're coming home to a place of such style and sophistication. Kick off your boots and slip on a robe, head downstairs and dip into the beautiful swimming pool. Warm up in the sauna and Hammam and relax your muscles in the spa. No better way to finish a days skiing, well, apart from the five-star cuisine awaiting you afterwards of course.
High 7 Penthouse
If a luxury ski-in/ski-out chalet in Zermatt appeals but you don’t need the space of your own large chalet, then how about the High 7 Penthouse. How can you ski into a penthouse I hear you cry? Conveniently, the High 7 Penthouse has its own private elevator to escort you straight from the snow to your own luxury apartment a few floors up. Genius.
The interior has been thoughtfully designed with marble and stone and locally sourced wood. The kitchen nestled in the eaves is a wonderful place for your own personal chef to prepare your daily feast and the private wellness area complete with sauna and relaxation bath will soothe away the stresses of the day on the mountain.
‘Cervo’ means ‘deer’ in Italian and this elaphine theme runs subtly throughout this small luxury hotel high above the village of Zermatt and benefits once again from the luxury of skiing to your own elevator. Formed of a collection of five chalets creating a unique and secluded hotel complex, Cervo chalets have five bedrooms and luxury facilities such as Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna to help you relax and refresh.
Luxury Ski Chalets with Swimming Pools in Zermatt
Chalets Alex and Elena also combine two elements of a luxury ski holiday to perfection and offer the ability to ski in and ski out AND also offer the use of a delightful swimming pool in its spa area. Adorned with mosaic orchids on the walls and ever-changing underwater lighting in the Infinity pool, the spa and wellness area will be a welcome sight after a day’s skiing.
Making up part of the renowned Chalet Shalimar, Chalets Elena and Alex have inherited the luxuriousness from its ‘parents’ and offer unrivalled views across the surrounding pistes and Matter Valley beyond. Each individual chalet apartment offers your group exquisite en suite bedrooms and contemporary interior décor to die for.
Luxury Ski Chalets with Hot Tubs
One of the most stylish chalets in the Firefly Collection is Chalet Aconcagua in the heart of Zermatt. No stone has been left unturned at Chalet Aconcagua. The spa area is very swish with its wonderfully woven day/massage beds and sunken bath/hot tub all clad in dark stone and intricate mosaics.
A blend of aged wood and black marble complement the ultra-modern lighting throughout the chalet and the über cool kids bunk-room will keep them entertained whilst you relax.
If industrial modern chic is what appeals from your ski luxury ski chalet then look no further than the Backstage Chalet. Suspended on the hillside in all its architectural glory, the five-bedroom showpiece has been finished superbly in aged Melez wood and stainless steel throughout. This combination is no more prevalent than surrounding the roof top hot tub. Suspended on hydraulics, this work of industrial art can elevate you and the whirlpool tub up through the open roof at the touch of a button. So it’s then just you and the stars high above the village and within touching distance of the Matterhorn. There are few luxury ski chalets with hot tubs that can match the sheer drama of the Backstage Chalet.
When you have an icon of such natural beauty as The Matterhorn your luxury ski chalet in Zermatt ought to showcase it from every room. Few chalets do this better than Chalet Maurice. Cascading down the hill at a jaunty angle, Chalet Maurice has been finished in fine stonework and quality joinery giving it a lovely warm cosy feel inside but it’s the outside where this chalet comes alive. The architects have not forgotten the view when putting balconies on every level all of which face the Matterhorn itself. The view is so stunning you’ll find yourself spending a lot of time at this luxury chalet in Zermatt, glass of champagne in hand marvelling at nature in all it’s beauty and soaking in the chalet’s outdoor hot tub.
